Abstract

Nursing is a multigenerationally diverse workforce, with up to five generations (Traditionalists, Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials, and Generation Z) contributing simultaneously (Gerhardt et. al, 2022). Each generation holds varied work preferences and retention drivers, which manifest as unique drivers of preventable turnover. Leaders can reduce turnover and its associated costs by cultivating a multi-generationally preferred work environment (Koehler & Olds, 2022). The purpose of this project was to deliver a workshop for nurse leaders to improve their knowledge about leading multigenerational workforces. Following literature review, A 2.5 hour in-person workshop was created and delivered at a community hospital. The project had three aims: develop the workshop, implement the workshop, and make recommendations for scaling the workshop. The workshop featured strategies to address generation specific retention, recruitment, and engagement factors. Content included generational work preferences, employment needs, information about bidirectional communication structures and mentorship opportunities. Partnership with site CNO, who championed the event and encouraged participation was essential. The workshop evaluation included pre/post test of knowledge acquisition and program evaluation. Data was analyzed using a paired t-test, and descriptive item analysis. Particpants scored the quality and value of content delivered at 4.96 (scale of 1-5, 5 is most favorable). The knowledge assessments revealed statistically significant (p<.001) improvement in mean score from 5.33 to 7.85 (total score possible: 10). Scaling opportunities for workshop include programmatic planning for HR and system nurse residency programs, and additional workshops within the health system.
