Abstract

The statistical properties of monthly extreme sea-surface temperatures have been investigated . The root mean square amplitudes of the annual oscillatiops are of the order of 2°C in southern California, 1°C in northern California, and 4°C in southeastern Alaska; those of the nonannual oscillations vary mostly between 0.9°C and 1.3°C and are largely independent of latitude. The average persistence of the nonannual extre,ne temperature oscillations is between three and seven months....
