Abstract
This thesis summarizes work towards improving Ni-catalyzed cross-electrophile coupling reactions through the development of new homogeneous organic electron donors and the understanding of ligand effects on key proposed elementary steps. Chapter 1 provides an overview of the current use of homogeneous organic electron donors and mechanistic understanding in Ni-catalyzed cross-electrophile coupling reactions. Chapter 2 describes the development of two new types of homogeneous reductants and their catalytic relevance. Chapter 3 details the effects of 6,6′-substituents on bipyridine-ligated Ni catalysts for cross-electrophile coupling. Chapter 4 describes progress towards understanding ligand effects on alkyl radical capture at NiII complexes, a key elementary step in cross-electrophile coupling.
