CEAS Reprint Series for Rare and Out of Print Publications

Despite the sense that large-scale digitization projects are perfecting access to information, there is still much scholarship and source material about East Asia that is not readily accessible to students and researchers. Books go out of print and digitization can be less than thorough when it comes to a territory like East Asian studies. In order to help counter this, the Council on East Asian Studies at Yale University has begun a reprint series in which it will produce digital reprints of works important to the study of East Asia that are no longer easily available, and make them available electronically through its Eli Scholar website. This will be an opportunity not only to increase access to such important works, but also to assess their influence, as each reprint will be accompanied by a scholarly introduction by a major academic. Each reprint will be produced through a professional scan of the original publication, which is then run through OCR. As the series strives to overcome the formation of digital territories, it also aims to further the CEAS’s goal of spanning the cultures of East Asia and the scholars that study them. It is hoped that future reprints will include works in languages other than English.

Rereading Sōseki: Three Early Twentieth-Century Japanese Novels

For the first project in the Council on East Asian Studies’s reprint series for rare and out of print publications, we are pleased to introduce an electronic republication of Rereading Sōseki: Three Early Twentieth-Century Japanese Novels, a very influential work from 1998 on the celebrated Japanese novelist Natsume Sōseki, written by Reiko Abe Auestad of the University of Oslo. J. Keith Vincent of Boston University has written a new introduction, and Auestad has provided a new preface as well as a bibliography of recent critical studies on Sōseki. We would like to thank John Whittier Treat for recommending this work, the book’s publishers for helping clear the rights, and the staff at the Yale Library for helping make this reprint a reality.
