Abstract

Surgical treatment of osteochondral lesions of the talus (OLT) is often augmented with various orthobiologic adjuvants. Such adjuvants aid in cartilage repair via different mechanisms. Although males and females appear to respond differently to chondrogenic stimuli, sex-specific responses to orthobiologic therapies used in OLT management have not been extensively investigated. This study seeks to identify whether sex may influence clinical outcomes when various orthobiologic adjuvants are implemented in OLT management. Through retrospective chart review, we will identify patients who have undergone OLT surgery with different adjuvants and compare the clinical outcomes between males and females. Subanalyses according to specific adjuvants used will be conducted to determine whether sexes respond differently to one adjuvant versus another. The identification of a possible relationship between female sex and clinical outcomes when orthobiologics are used in OLT management may allow clinicians to provide more individualized care according to sex, ultimately promoting better clinical outcomes.
