For a source and receiver on the axis of a deep sound channel we solve the two point boundary value problem for the arriving sound pulse using the classical ray theory approximation. The procedure is a generalization of that of Munk (1974) and we emphasize the determination of parameter changes in the sound channel by inverse techniques.
