Abstract
A simple analysis shows the analogy between Rossby waves and waves caused by irregularities in the depth of a homogeneous layer of fluid in a rotating system. The effect of bottom topography is shown to be very important in generating low-frequency waves and is more important than the β effect even for relatively small changes in the depth....
