Abstract

This pilot study responds to a lack of research directly linking Type 1 Diabetes stigma and long-term outcomes. Using the 19-item Diabetes Stigma Assessment Scale Type-1 (DSAS-1) in an online survey, 77 responses were received, of which 69 were sufficient to be analyzed. Though insufficient to achieve statistical confidence, participants reporting high stigma scores showed 1.18 times odds of reporting long-term complications. Suggestions for future research are presented in order to clarify the relationship seen here and assess the feasibility of anti-stigma interventions for Type 1 Diabetes care and policy.
