Abstract

Frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis, is a condition of the shoulder characterized by inflammation and fibrosis resulting in pain and progressive loss of range of motion. While the condition is common, the exact pathophysiology is not well understood, making a standard of treatment difficult to develop. We propose a study that will compare oral methylprednisolone coupled with standard physical therapy and intra-articular corticosteroid injection combined with standard physical therapy in patients with frozen shoulder. This proposed trial will comprise of 194 participants who will be randomized into one of these two groups to assess abbreviated Constant-Murley scores which evaluate pain, restriction in activities of daily living, and range of motion between groups compared to baseline scores for 6 months. The results will provide more insight into developing a more comprehensive, multimodal, nonoperative approach for the treatment of frozen shoulder to improve patient functionality.
