Abstract

Gestational diabetes is one of the most common obstetric complications and causes both intrapartum issues and increased long-term cardiometabolic risk of type 2 diabetes. Overweight and obese populations are more likely to develop gestational diabetes, which manifests as increased gestational weight gain and postpartum weight retention, perpetuating the cycle of obesity and diabetes in future pregnancies leading to further type 2 diabetes risk. Metformin has become more widely accepted for use during pregnancy and has been associated with decreased gestational weight gain; however, its long-term effects in the postpartum period remain poorly understood. This randomized controlled trial seeks to determine the effects of postpartum metformin use on postpartum weight changes in the setting of recent gestational diabetes. By comparing mean reduction in postpartum weight, we aim to establish whether the cardiometabolic protective factors of metformin on type 2 diabetes risk extend to this high-risk population.
