Description

Image appears in 175th anniversary book with following caption, "The mechanical heart pump was invented by Yale medical student William H. Sewell Jr. in 1949, and tested successfully with the help of his professor, Dr. William Glenn. Here, Glenn (left) and Dr. Paul Laurie (center) help Sewell (right) with one of his early prototypes. The test proved that a mechanical pump could divert blood flow, or "bypass" the right side of the heart, allowing surgeons to operate on it. Glenn made many other contributions to cardiothoracic surgery, and Sewell's invention laid the foundation of today's artificial heart."
