Abstract
Characteristics of the Niño event of 1972 were examined, using monthly descriptions of sea surface temperatures in the eastern tropical Pacific and in the region offshore from Peru, monthly average temperatures from Peruvian coastal stations, and surface temperature and salinity data from oceanographic cruises. Observations were compared with those from previous events, especially that of 1965, and some general features of the phenomenon were established....
