Abstract

The distribution of clay mineral suites in surficial sediments of the southeastern Pacific is clearly r elated to variations in the composition of volcanic contributions to the sediments. The ratio of alkali feldspar plus quartz to plagioclase has been used to characterize the volcanic contributions. Sediments in areas of dominantly acidic volcanism contain clay mineral suites that are largely of detrital origin, mainly "illite" and chlorite....
