Abstract

This thesis examines Jonathan Edwards' (1703-1758) notion of the experience of the creation. It argues that for Edwards, the human experience of the good creation, in its essence, is experiencing God Himself, especially its beauty that resembles God's. The experience is comprehensive, involving human intellect, volition, and body, and will continue in some manner to the new creation. Meanwhile, Edwards' occasionalism raises potential theological and philosophical issues regarding the integrity of creation, the persistence of human identity, and the continuation of this world to the next.
